RARE! Jubilee of Guilds of Newfoundland Sailer Doll | Sailcloth Fisherman Doll with Hand Painted Wooden Head

In 1929, there was a disastrous tidal wave on the south coast of Newfoundland. In response, a small group of volunteers, under the leadership of Lady Muriel Anderson, wife of the Governor of Newfoundland, Sir David Murray Anderson, formed the Service League to help the people affected by the disaster. When the immediate need was over, the volunteers decided to form a permanent organization. This was launched in 1935, the Silver Jubilee of King George V and the group was named the "Jubilee* Guilds. Its motto, "Confidence, Courage and Unity", was taken from the King's speech to the Empire on the occasion of his Jubilee.

This RARE find of a doll was likely made as a fundraiser for the organization. On the inside of the doll's jacket has a tag "handmade by the Jubilee Guilds of Newfoundland". The doll appears to be made from sail cloth or tarp of some sort.
